From fear to fire: How Vulamathuba students prepared for their final lap

10 July 2025

As May arrived at the Brooklyn Learning Centre, there was a palpable sense of anticipation in the air. After months of dedication, late-night study sessions, and unwavering commitment, the Vulamathuba Empumelelo Matric Programme students were approaching their final examination period. But before they embarked on this crucial journey, the team organised something special—a pre-final exam preparation day that would transform anxiety into confidence and fear into determination.

Wisdom from those who’ve walked the path

The day began with powerful words from past alumni who understood exactly what the current students were experiencing. Shaygen Mason, 33, a previous programme graduate, took the stage first, his presence alone serving as proof that success was within reach.

“I remember sitting exactly where you are now, feeling the weight of uncertainty on my shoulders,” Shaygen shared with the attentive audience. “But I want you to know that every moment of doubt you feel fuels your fire. You didn’t come this far only to come this far. Trust in the work you’ve put in, your tutors, and most importantly, yourself.”

The room was then graced by Sandra Ndlovu, 29, from Grassy Park, the top-performing student from the previous group. Her academic excellence had set a new standard for the programme, and her words carried the authority of someone who had survived the final exams and thrived.

“Excellence isn’t about being perfect,” Sandra told the group, her voice steady and inspiring. “It’s about showing up daily, even when you don’t feel ready. The knowledge is already inside you; the exams are just your opportunity to let it shine. Don’t let fear dim your light when you’re close to illuminating your future.”

Burning away the past: A ritual of release

Following the motivational speeches, the students participated in what would become one of the most powerful moments of the day. Each learner was given a piece of paper and asked to write down, in complete privacy, their deepest regrets, their greatest fears, and anything they believed might hold them back during the upcoming exams.

The exercise was met with thoughtful silence as students poured their hearts onto paper: fears of failure, regrets about missed opportunities, anxieties about their age, concerns about competing with younger candidates, and doubts about their ability to succeed after previous setbacks.

“We all carry baggage from our past,” explained Mr. Fanie, one of the tutors, watching as students carefully folded their papers, some even shedding tears. But today, we’re going to leave that weight behind.”

The walk to freedom

What happened next was nothing short of transformative. The entire group stepped outside the familiar walls of the Vulamathuba Community Learning Centre for a symbolic walk, not just any walk, but a journey toward letting go. As they moved together as one unit, there was a sense of solidarity that only comes from shared struggle and mutual support.

At the designated spot, a small fire was prepared. One by one, students approached and fed their fears to the flames. The papers crackled and disappeared, taking with them years of self-doubt and limitation. Some students stood in quiet reflection, others wiped away tears of relief, and many smiled as they watched their written fears turn to ash.

“Seeing those fears burn felt like a huge weight was lifted off my chest,” shared one student afterwards. “I realised I was carrying things that didn’t belong to me anymore.”

Games, laughter, and light hearts

The afternoon transformed completely as the serious tone of preparation gave way to joy and celebration. The organisers had planned various games and activities designed to build camaraderie and release any remaining tension.

Laughter echoed through the halls as students participated in team-building exercises, friendly competitions, and interactive games that reminded everyone why they were there, not just to pass exams, but to embrace new possibilities and celebrate how far they’d already come.

“It was exactly what we needed,” reflected one student. “After months of intensity, we got just to be ourselves and remember that we’re not just students—we’re people with dreams, and we’re allowed to enjoy this journey.”

Ready for the final lap

As the day ended, the atmosphere markedly differed from how it had begun. Where there had been nervous energy and quiet anxiety, there was now confidence and determination. The students weren’t just academically prepared—they were emotionally and mentally ready to face their final examinations.

The combination of wisdom from successful alumni, the cathartic release of limiting beliefs, and the joy of shared experiences had created the perfect foundation for success. These adult learners, who had already shown incredible courage by choosing to pursue their matric qualifications later in life, were now armed with something even more powerful than knowledge—unshakeable belief in themselves.

The journey continues

As the current group of students prepares for their final examinations, they carry with them months of study and preparation and the powerful reminder that they are part of something bigger. They are part of a community that believes in second chances, celebrates resilience, and understands that success isn’t defined by when you cross the finish line but by the courage to keep running your race.

The Vulamathuba Empumelelo Matric Programme continues to prove that it’s never too late to rewrite your story. With their fears burned away and spirits lifted high, these students are ready to show the world—and themselves—exactly what they’re capable of achieving.
