Social Cohesion

Our Social Cohesion offering fosters positive attitudes toward diversity, builds unity and promotes peaceful, harmonious living among Communicare tenants and surrounding communities. Because our communities are multigenerational and multiracial, the programmes focus on bringing people together and reducing conflict through meaningful integration. These activities are designed to build a sense of community, encourage independence and strengthen resilience among individuals and households.

Dance Programme

We host weekly after-school dance sessions at four Communicare complexes for children and teenagers that promote discipline and resilience while ensuring their safety while some parents and guardians are at work. The sessions are presented by professional contemporary dancers.

Dance has many benefits for kids, including better overall health and relationships with peers. It encourages creativity and critical thinking and teaches self-discipline and respectful behaviour to others.

Food Gardening Project

Our Food Gardening project promotes food security and forms part of our efforts to support social cohesion among Communicare tenants while contributing to the organisation's Green Strategy. Participants can enjoy organic vegetables that they've grown and harvested themselves. They bond while creating a communal garden in a raised bed format within their complexes.

Several seniors benefit from the project, especially in complexes like MontClaire Place in Mandalay where the SASSA grant is the main source of income. Vegetables are sold to non-participants and shared among group members. Winter months are often highlighted by making and sharing soup using vegetables grown in food gardens.

Health Promotion for Older Persons

This programme is implemented to enable older persons to achieve a healthy, productive and active lifestyle. The interventions offered promote independent living and create opportunities for older people to have regular physical activity, educational talks and social interaction with fellow Communicare tenants and community members.

We implement the Health Promotion for Seniors in four complexes and one community-based organisation, working with universities, local Community Health Organisations, Community Health Centres and physiotherapists to provide a holistic health assessment, exercises and health talks for elderly tenants to promote independence, access to healthcare and early intervention.

Vula Teens Life Skills

Our Life Skills Programme is specifically designed for children and adolescents aged 8 to 15. This programme aims to equip young participants with essential non-academic skills crucial for navigating the complexities of adolescence and preparing them for future success.

The primary goal of the programme is to foster holistic development in young individuals by teaching them critical emotional, social and interpersonal competencies. It seeks to empower participants to manage their emotions effectively, build healthy relationships, resist negative peer pressure and develop strong teamwork abilities.
