From numbers to new roads: Zandile’s journey with Vulamathuba

The bursary that opens doors

At Vulamathuba, we believe education is more than just a qualification — it’s the key to economic mobility and a brighter future. That belief forms the heart of the Vulamathuba Bursary Fund, which supports students pursuing critical and scarce skills across universities, colleges, and vocational training.

The bursary is not just about paying fees. It’s about holistic support: mentorship, academic guidance, emotional encouragement, and even practical assistance that helps students unlock their full potential.

Meet Zandile: More than just a student

This month, we shine a spotlight on Zandile Zingelwa (24) from Communicare’s Goedehoop complex in Brooklyn. In 2024, Vulamathuba funded her Higher Certificate in Accounting Fees. This year, they are funding her first-year BCom Accounting Science studies at the University of South Africa, which is enabling her to work towards her dream of becoming a Chartered Accountant. Recently, Zandile also celebrated passing her driver’s license test after Vulamathuba paid for her driving lessons and testing fees.

Zandile puts it:

“The Vulamathuba Bursary made a major difference in my life. Academically, it allowed me to dedicate more time to my studies. Emotionally, knowing that I had financial support gave me a sense of relief and boosted my confidence, enabling me to focus on my goals.”

A journey of growth

Zandile’s journey reflects the layered support of the bursary. Financially, it lifted the weight of tuition fees. Emotionally, it gave her the peace of mind to focus on her goals. Mentorship sessions, meanwhile, provided guidance, encouragement, and a sense of belonging that carried her through the challenges of university life.

“Beyond the financial support, Vulamathuba profoundly influenced my sense of self and purpose. The programme made me realise my potential and instilled a sense of confidence in my abilities.”
