Welcome to an exciting new chapter at Vulamathuba, where we’re championing financial literacy and personal growth. Recently, our centre hosted a transformative Financial Literacy session that left everyone inspired and ready for a brighter future.

Empowering Financial Skills with Nedbank
On a sunny morning in Cape Town, bursary students and adult matriculants gathered eagerly at our Learning Centre. Led by the dynamic team from Nedbank, with the insightful Linda Gcwabe at the helm, the session was a game-changer. Linda’s expertise illuminated essential financial skills, from managing everyday budgets to nurturing entrepreneurial dreams.

Personal Stories of Transformation
A standout moment was hearing from Sibulelo Mafrika, 35, from Langa, who courageously shared her struggle with the burden of the black tax. Her story resonated deeply as she spoke about prioritising herself and her future, inspired by the session to grow her business even larger.
“Breaking free from the obligations of black tax is especially challenging for women. I had to have a heart-to-heart with myself, realising that prioritising my dreams and aspirations was essential for my growth and success”, she says.

Insights and Practical Tips
Linda’s practical tips on budgeting were invaluable. She emphasised tracking expenses closely, setting clear budget limits, and establishing short-term and long-term financial goals—essential steps toward financial freedom.

Key Budgeting Tips:
Create a Budget: Allocate funds for essentials like rent, food, and transport, and set limits for discretionary spending.

Track Your Spending: Use budgeting apps or simple spreadsheets to monitor expenses closely.

Set Financial Goals: Define short-term and long-term objectives, such as saving for a vacation or paying off debts.

Strategies for Saving:
Start an Emergency Fund: Aim to save three to six months’ worth of living expenses in a separate account.

Automate Savings: Set up automatic transfers from your checking to your savings account for consistent savings.

Utilise Student Discounts: Take advantage of discounts offered to students by various businesses.

Moving Forward with Gratitude
Vulamathuba Empumelelo extends heartfelt thanks to Nedbank and Linda for their invaluable support. Together, through our mentorship programme, we’re cultivating dreams and brightening futures.
