Vulamathuba Empumelelo is thrilled to announce the official induction of its new matric class, which kicked off on 5 July 2025 at the Vulamathuba Community Learning Centre in Brooklyn, Cape Town.

The adult matric programme forms part of Vulamathuba Empumelelo’s economic mobility programmes, which aim to foster access to PIVOTAL (Professional, Vocational, Technical, and Academic Learning) programmes that enhance employability, career progression, and long-term economic stability, ultimately empowering individuals to transform their futures.

Following the success of our previous cohort, who completed their final exams at the end of June, we are proud to welcome a new intake of determined individuals, each bringing with them hope, ambition, and a hunger to rewrite their futures.

First impressions, big dreams

When the induction started, the room was buzzing with a mix of nerves and curiosity. Some participants were shy, quietly observing, while others smiled as they took in the space that would soon become a second home.

But as the Vulamathuba team introduced themselves and unpacked the heart of our mission—to promote economic mobility, social cohesion, and independence—something changed. The room warmed up. Heads nodded. Faces lit up.

Then came the most powerful moment of the day:

One by one, each participant was asked why they chose to return and complete their matric.

Their answers were moving, honest, and surprisingly unified:

They all wanted more.

More education. More opportunity. More growth.

Many shared their goals of studying further, ranging from nursing to law, teaching to IT.

One participant bravely spoke about the challenges he experienced while trying to complete his matric at another institution and the renewed hope he has: “I’ve found my place with Vulamathuba.”

Setting the stage for success

The induction wasn’t just for the students. Tutors and teachers also had an induction—a chance to reconnect, align, and be reminded of the power they hold in shaping lives. As always, the spirit of commitment, love, and service filled the room.

“This tutor induction was more than what we hoped for. It reminded us of the growth within our team, the passion behind our work, and the power of serving this community.” – Mr. Zondi, Vulamathuba teacher

And just in time for the new year, Vulamathuba had a few exciting surprises to reveal:

🌟 New additions at the Learning Centre:

  • A brand-new computer lab – with up-to-date systems to support digital learning
  • A large interactive touchscreen board – making lessons more engaging and user-friendly
  • A revamped library space – perfect for studying, relaxing, and reading
  • Improved outdoor seating – so students can enjoy their breaks in a calm, open space

These upgrades reflect Vulamathuba’s commitment to creating an inspiring, well-equipped learning environment.

“We’re not just offering a programme. We’re offering a fresh start in a space that’s built for growth, comfort, and connection.” Joe Africa, Senior Administrator

The journey begins

Classes officially began the following week—and what a start! With over 50 students enrolled, the energy was unmatched. The assistant coordinator did classroom visits and reported vibrant, interactive sessions across all subjects.

In Geography, students asked thought-provoking questions about climate change and human migration. In English, passionate debates filled the room. Even those who had once doubted their ability to return to the classroom found themselves fully engaged.

To top it all off, the group was honoured by a motivational visit from Justin Paulse, 24, from Brooklyn, one of last year’s standout learners. Now preparing to begin his tertiary studies, Justin spoke with conviction:

“You think it’s going to be a long year, but trust me—it flies by. Make every day count. What you’re doing now will open doors you never imagined. I see your dedication, and it reminds me of myself. If I could do it, so can you.” – Justin Paulse, former programme participant

A strong start to an exciting year

This new cohort is already proving that with the right support and mindset, transformation is possible. They’ve signed their agreements, met their teachers, explored their new learning space, and most importantly—they’ve shown up.

They’ve taken the first step. And that step is powerful.
