As we welcome the new year, we look back with pride at the progress made in Vulamathuba Empumelelo’s Matric Programme during November and December. This initiative continues to give hope and second chances to adult learners eager to rewrite their future by completing or improving their matric results.
Designed with flexibility in mind, the programme supports busy adult learners through Saturday classes at the Vulamathuba Community Learning Centre in Brooklyn and online sessions during the week. In the previous year, 29 learners successfully passed their matric exams, and the programme has launched yet another promising group, showing that it’s never too late to chase your dreams.
Mock exams: Preparing for success
The mock exams were carefully designed to replicate the pressures of the final exams, helping students prepare mentally and academically. With experienced educators like Mr Fanie creating the exam papers and the unwavering support of the Vulamathuba team, every detail was planned to ensure the best experience for the learners.
From personalised seating arrangements to clear rules, the exam setup aimed to instil confidence and focus. For many students, the mock exams served as a reality check, motivating them to refine their study habits and aim higher.
A competitive and promising new group
The students began their journey in August 2024, bringing a new dynamic to the programme. According to Mr Fanie from Langa, one of the programme’s dedicated tutors with over 30 years of experience, “This group is different in a good way. They are very quiet, which worried me at first, but they’re incredibly competitive and unique in their motivations for being here,” he shared. “Their mock exam results already show they are strong performers.”
One student already made her mark during the mock exams. Logan Reeve Van Nelson, 24, from Milnerton, who last attended school in 2017 when doing grade 10 before enrolling in this programme, achieved the highest average score of 73%, including an impressive 88% in Afrikaans, 79% in History, and 77% in Mathematical Literacy. She shared her thoughts on the experience, reflecting on both the challenges and triumphs:
“Walking into the space for the first exam was scary at first. Although we always had our whole table, it made everything feel real. That’s when it hit me—I’m doing this alone and must put my best foot forward.”
Despite the initial nerves, Logan embraced the challenge, drawing inspiration from her family and personal goals. When asked why she is doing her matric, she states, “All my siblings have their matric, which I also will have in a few months, of course. But they don’t have distinctions. I want to break that record in the family!”
Her competitive spirit and commitment to excellence made her a role model for her peers. Yet, Logan remains humble and focused: “I feel positive about what’s ahead, but I always tell myself that I can do better.”
Elroy’s perspective: Discovering his potential
Elroy Borchards, 31, from Kalksteenfontein, also found the mock exams to be a defining moment in his journey. “At first, I found the mock exams very stressful and nerve-racking. I wasn’t even sure I’d get good results,” he admitted. “But my will to do my best and the constant motivation and support from our tutors gave me the strength to push through.”
Elroy’s efforts paid off when the results were announced. “When I received my report, I was surprised I got 79% in History, and 78% in Economics. That showed me I could do even better.”
Now, Elroy is determined to use the remaining months to improve further. “The mock exams were a much-needed experience. They showed me what I’m capable of, and now, my goal for the final exams is to ace them. I know I can do it.”
Looking ahead
As the team gears up for the next term, they are optimistic about what this group of learners will achieve. With the students’ dedication and the relentless support of the tutors, the programme is set to reach even greater heights this year.
