Wilmore Choto’s story is one of perseverance, innovation, and the power of community support. As a recipient of the Vulamathuba Empumelelo Bursary Fund and a Communicare tenant, Wilmore (38) has pursued his studies in electrical engineering at the College of Cape Town while growing a solar energy business on the side. With a passion for renewable energy and a strong entrepreneurial drive, Wilmore is making strides in both his academic and business ventures.

“The bursary lifted a huge weight off my shoulders,” Wilmore shares. “It has allowed me to focus fully on my studies and my business without worrying about tuition costs.” His business, which specialises in providing affordable solar energy systems for homes and small businesses, has gained traction over the past year, long before he entered the Allan Gray national competition aimed at artisan qualifications and entrepreneurship in sustainable energy innovations.

Building Connections Through Mentorship
What is unique about Wilmore’s journey is the collaboration that emerged through Vulamathuba’s mentorship programme. Through this initiative, he met alumnus Sibulelo Mafrika (35), another young entrepreneur passionate about business development. Although they come from different paths, with Wilmore as an engineering student and Mafrika as a Vulamathuba Matric Programme graduate and business strategist, they connected over their shared goals. “Mafrika really helped me with my competition presentation,” Wilmore says. “We spent hours refining my pitch, ensuring that the technical aspects of my solar energy solutions were balanced with a solid business strategy. The Vulamathuba mentorship programme helped us connect, and that’s where the real teamwork began.”

Lasting Impact of Collaboration
Their collaboration was not just a one-off partnership for the competition; it represents how Vulamathuba’s initiatives foster meaningful connections and a sense of community among young people striving for success in different sectors. “It was amazing to see how two individuals from our programmes came together through shared knowledge and mentorship,” says a Vulamathuba representative. “They’re not just building businesses; they’re building networks that will last.”

A Successful Presentation
Wilmore delivered a compelling presentation at the competition, showcasing not only his technical expertise but also his business acumen. While his solar energy business was already thriving, generating steady revenue and attracting clients, Wilmore entered the competition with the goal of securing more capital to expand his reach. “I wasn’t in the competition to kickstart my business; it was already running well. But I knew that winning could help me take things to the next level,” he explains.

Recognition and Opportunity
The competition was fierce, but Wilmore’s passion for sustainable energy shone through. His well-researched, client-tested solar power solutions earned him second place, which was an impressive achievement. “It wasn’t just about the prize. It was the exposure, the connections, and the validation of my work,” Wilmore reflects. The competition opened doors to potential clients, investors, and collaborators.

Family Support
At the heart of Wilmore’s journey is the support of his family. His brother, Tinashe Choto, has been one of his biggest supporters. “Wilmore has always been ambitious,” Tinashe says proudly. “He’s the type of person who sees an opportunity and goes after it. We’re all so proud of what he’s achieving, and I know he’s just getting started.”

A Vision for the Future
As Wilmore prepares to complete his trade test and grow his business, his vision remains clear: to bring affordable solar energy to South African communities, making a tangible impact on people’s lives. With his hard work, the support of Vulamathuba, and his growing network of mentors and peers, Wilmore is well on his way to powering a brighter future.
